Keeping customers safe from tripping hazards

On Behalf of | Jun 16, 2019 | Premises Liability Defense |

A concern of many business owners in New York that often goes unrealized by the busy patron is keeping their premises safe and free of hazards that could accidentally injure their customers. Often, companies spend time throughout the day monitoring their premises to make sure that hazards are dealt with in a timely manner before they turn into risks.

Unfortunately, there are times when the carelessness of a customer can contribute to an accident in which he or she is injured. During these situations, it is not uncommon for the company to be investigated as authorities try to reach the bottom of what has happened. In these circumstances, companies may have to defend their position and provide evidence that the accident was not in fact, their fault.

CBS News shared a rather puzzling story where a man purposely scattered a cup of ice chips on the floor of his previous employer. He then proceeded to fake a slip and fall because of the ice chips and laid motionlessly on the floor waiting for someone to discover him. Initially, an ambulance came and transported the man to a local hospital to be checked out. However, security footage of the incident revealed what had actually happened and the man ended up facing several charges including insurance fraud.

In their efforts to maintain a workplace that is free of hazards, The Travelers Companies Inc. suggests that business owners regularly assess their premises to identify areas that need to be better maintained to reduce a falling hazard. They can also benefit from documenting any accidents that do happen so they can implement measures to prevent a similar accident from happening in the future.
